CASTLE IN THE AIR, LIVING ROOM, OPERA STAGE

The Allianz Arena is much more than just an architectural icon. With its illuminated façade made up of 2,784 air cushions, it has long since become a Munich landmark. In the 20 years since it was built, it has undergone constant change – from renovations and modernisations to hosting NFL games. The special exhibition ‘20 Years of the Allianz Arena – Castle in the Air, Living Room, Opera Stage’ at the FC Bayern Museum brings the unique history of the Allianz Arena to life. As a reference to the construction phase, scaffolding forms the modular and structural basis of the exhibition design. A varied thematic approach invites visitors to discover and interact. A quiz challenges their knowledge, while flaps and viewing windows reveal surprising insights. Original material samples make the construction literally tangible.

‘It was clear from the very beginning: the Allianz Arena is not something you exhibit – you have to experience it. Our concept therefore combines the creation of the famous architecture with the emotions of the fan curve and memorable football moments. The result is an exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through time and allows them to feel the special atmosphere of the place. ’

CONSTRUCTION HISTORY OF THE ALLIANZ ARENA

What began as a vision became reality with the 2006 World Cup in Germany: today, the Allianz Arena is home to FC Bayern München. The first part of the exhibition, ‘Luftschloss’ (Castle in the Air), focuses on the history of the stadium‘s creation – from the search for a location to the referendum and architectural competition to its construction. Selected exhibits illustrate the history of the building: a replica of the foundation stone, the illuminated competition model of the arena by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, and a piece of the façade that visitors can also touch.

IN THE LIVING ROOM OF FC BAYERN

The people – whether on the field, in the stands or behind the scenes – make the Allianz Arena the club‘s ‘living room’. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to them. It pays tribute to the fans, whose choreographed displays add to the emotion of match days and who were also involved in designing the interior in 2017. In addition, 20 influential personalities – including players and employees – recount their most important moments from 20 years of Arena history.

A BIG STAGE FOR FOOTBALL

Above all, however, the Allianz Arena is the venue for unforgettable football matches – with emotional dramas and spectacular highlights. The third part of the exhibition looks at the arena as an ‘opera stage’ for football and reviews triumphs and defeats, sensations and curiosities. Visitors can take a seat in the Champions League stands and enjoy a ‘best of’ from 20 years of the Allianz Arena.
