The sense of nature:

the city and the green

2021 | Exhibitions | Historisches Museum Frankfurt | Urban Gardening

What does it actually mean to feel nature in an urban context? In Frankfurt am Main, three exhibitions of the Historisches Museum Frankfurt focus on urban greenery from March 2021. Two anniversaries provide the appropriate context: 150 years of the Palmengarten and 3 decades of the GrünGürtel.

The exhibitions we designed, “Frankfurter Gartenlust” (Frankfurt Garden Pleasure), “Umwelt, Klima & DU” (Environment, Climate & You) and “Gärtnern Jetzt!” (Gardening Now!) not only inform and question critically, but also explicitly call to action.

Our scenography for the exhibition “Frankfurter Gartenlust” tells the stories of Frankfurt’s gardens and parks, starting with garden culture in the 17th and 18th centuries and ending with “contested space” in the 21st century. With the help of large focus walls and portals the respective chapters are opened to create orientation and form the “green theme” through the exhibition narrative.

A different perspective on the overarching theme is offered by the interactive exhibition “Umwelt, Klima & DU” in the Junges Museum. Here, children from the age of 7 have the opportunity to playfully immerse themselves into the depths of biodiversity, sustainability, climate and environmentally conscious cities. In specially developed characters, the illustrative design style encourages children to absorb knowledge with the aim of applying what they have learned in everyday life.

A further special exhibition space, the Stadtlabor, was created by the Historisches Museum Frankfurt to invite the urban community to get involved in participatory projects. The presentation “Gärtnern Jetzt!”, which was developed together with 50 gardeners, also follows the claim of applied practice. The exhibition architecture also follows this motif: in two workshops with the urban lab workers we developed a scenographic interpretation that communicates the underlying passion in a striking way. The exhibition will open on 28 April 2021.
