200 years after the publication of Arthur Schopenhauer’s “The World as Will and Imagination”, two anniversary exhibitions focus on the philosopher.
The festive occasion is accompanied by the installation “Jenseits der Vorstellung” (Beyond the Imagination) and the opening exhibition “Selbstdenken” (Self Thinking) in the Schopenhauer Studio, which has been redesigned as an exhibition and communication space.
Staging complex philosophical and archival contexts in an understandable and informative way.
A narrative triad that not only provides deep insights into thinking and archive work, but is also
equipped for future exhibitions and application scenarios.
Planning, design, architecture, implementation
In the course of his life, Schopenhauer developed different and sometimes contradictory views on this subject. The multi-coloured elements, which are provided with keywords from the context of meaning, are accordingly reminiscent of a smashed church window. The constantly changing, multi-perspective mobile constellations express Schopenhauer’s dynamic world of thought and reveal the play of terms in space. Didactically, the mobile is accompanied by large-format posters that allow a closer look into the philosopher’s thoughts.
A diagonal axis stands symbolically for the processual penetration of thinking. A flexible modular system of showcases, tables and workstations transform the exhibition area into a knowledge workshop. The spatial concept is based on the principles of functionalism. From its clarity and flexibility a formable thematic architecture emerges, which simultaneously enables permanent and temporary exhibitions and a transformation into an event space for conferences and lectures.
At the entrance, visitors are confronted with current questions of time - which, as it turns out in the course of the exhibition tour, merge seamlessly into Schopenhauer's philosophy. The narration extends along a main axis, which initially leads from general questions into epistemology and into “The World as Will and Imagination”, but then splits up into natural philosophy, ethics and aesthetics. The writing workshop brings original manuscripts, autographs and Schopenhauer’s working methods to life.
